Dining With The Homeless Children of Makerere Kivulu

April 17, 2011

***This activity carried on by the KKF Youth League was enabled due to the generous financial donation from Kirabo Youth Foundation International.***

It was a rainy Sunday morning when the Kirabo Kids Foundation Youth League team members and well wishers gathered around Nana hostel and set of to Makerere Kivulu.

Access to Makerere Kivulu was very difficult because it had rained in the morning and the road was very slippery making the youth league's work very difficult. Despite this difficult traveling conditions the group arrived at Grace Fellowship Nursery and Primary School, which was the venue for the occasion.

Members were warmly welcomed by the school headteacher, care takers of the orphans and vulnerable children at around 12:05 pm.

After setting up and cooking the meal, 80 children were served and fed by the youth league. Afterward, donated clothing was distributed to the children. Villages where the children came from were Kivulu, Kivulu II, Kitamanyangamba, LDC and National Housing.

During the KKF Youth Leagues visit, one on one talks were held with parents and children who described the hardships being endured in the community and major problems being faced. Those hardship challenges described were:

  • Malaria spreading frequently due to lack of mosquito nets within the community
  • Lack of school fees and school requirements for the children such as geometry sets, books, pens, pencils, and other stationary needs.
  • Lack of under garments for both the boys and girls.
  • Lack of bedding items such as bedsheets, blankets and mattresses for the children
  • Major shortage of girls personal sanitary towels and therefore a need for a source and distribution
  • The parents told of their need of income generating activities so as to be in a position to help their children. They suggested piggery and poultry among other basic agricultural needs, which would enable them to achieve self-sufficiency.

To enable meeting the urgent and desperate needs of these children and others in Uganda, your support by way of donation of money, goods or volunteer time, will make a huge difference in the lives of these children, their families and community.
